India - Importable Wastes and Prohibited Wastes

Wastes that are allowed to be imported to India fall into three tiers, each with different levels of control from the regulatory authorities.

 

The first tier are hazardous wastes listed in Part A of Schedule III in the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules which are restricted and cannot be allowed to be imported without permission from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade license, if applicable.      

 

The second tier are non-hazardous wastes (other wastes) listed in Part B of Schedule IIIwhich are also restricted and cannot be allowed to be imported without permission from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade license, if applicable.      

 

The third tier covers non-hazardous wastes (other wastes) listed in Part D of Schedule III, which are applicable for import without permission from Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Commonly imported scrap grade on this list include Paper, paperboard and paper product wastes, Iron and Steel scrap in metallic, non-dispersible form, Copper scrap in metallic, non-dispersible form, Aluminium scrap in metallic, non-dispersible form as well as Mixed non-ferrous metal of certain specification,

Wastes that are prohibited from exporting to India are listed in Schedule VI of Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules. The most notable category prohibited is solid plastic waste.
